Lot 194: Simon Bull (British, b. 1958), Windermere, 1985
Simon Bull (British, b. 1958). A winter landscape depicting Windermere in the Lake District. The scene features a snow-covered shoreline in the foreground with dormant reeds and grasses, leading to a calm lake with a central wooded island populated by dark pine and deciduous trees. The composition utilises a muted tonal palette of greys, browns, and ochres under a hazy atmospheric sky. Executed in watercolour on paper. Signed and dated SIMON BULL – 1985 – to the lower right margin of the artwork. Titled Windermere by Simon Bull to the lower left margin. The work is presented in a dark green double-mount with a gilt inner bevel, housed in a fluted gilt-finished frame.
Condition report:
The watercolour exhibits minor cockling to the paper surface. The colours appear stable with no significant signs of fading or foxing. The frame shows light shelf wear with small nicks to the gilt finish, particularly at the corners. There is surface dust present on the glass along with two adhesive labels. The backing has not been inspected.
