Lot 163: A Collection of Vintage British Brass Horse Martingales and Loose Horse Brasses
A collection of vintage leather horse martingales mounted with cast and stamped brass ornaments, commonly known as British horse brasses, together with several loose brass items. The brasses feature a variety of traditional motifs including an owl, an eagle or phoenix, Prince of Wales feathers, a seated animal, and floral designs. One specific brass features a central shield design embossed with the letters G, U, I, L, D. The collection consists of multiple leather straps of varying lengths with associated brass medallions and a small group of unmounted brass pieces. A white adhesive label marked 14 14 and an orange tag handwritten with 163 are present.
Condition report:
The brass elements exhibit surface tarnish, oxidation, and visible verdigris. The leather martingales are in a worn condition, showing signs of stiffness, surface cracking, and dust accumulation consistent with age and utilitarian use.
