Lot 526: Victorian Style Engraved Silver-Coloured Metal Pill or Snuff Box with Gilt Interior
A small rectangular hinged box, likely intended for use as a pill or snuff box, constructed from silver-coloured metal. The exterior surfaces of the lid and sides are elaborately decorated with chased and engraved foliate scrollwork, floral motifs, and geometric borders. The lid features a central circular medallion with a radiating sunburst design. The interior of the box displays a gilt or gold-wash finish, a technique traditionally used to prevent the metal from reacting with contents such as tobacco or medicinal pills. Small punch marks are visible on the inner rim of the base and inside the lid; however, they are not clearly legible in the images, precluding a definitive attribution to a specific maker or assay office.
