Lot 484: Mid-20th Century Chinese Export Relief Carved Camphor Wood Blanket Chest
A mid-20th-century Chinese export storage chest or blanket box, crafted from solid camphor wood. The chest features elaborate relief-carved scenes on the lid and front panel, showcasing traditional motifs of bamboo stalks, foliage, and stylised landscape elements. The hinged lid includes recessed carved finger-pulls on the front corners for ease of opening. Centrally mounted on the front is a traditional circular brass latch with a decorative backplate and a bar closure. The wood grain is prominent throughout, characteristic of the camphor species. The construction utilises traditional joinery techniques. No maker’s marks, labels, or stamps are visible on the exterior.
Condition report:
The chest remains in a good and stable condition overall. There is visible surface wear consistent with age and use, including light scratches, minor scuffs to the finish, notably along the edges, and some slight fading. The relief carvings are well-preserved with no significant losses or damage observed. A small yellow auction lot tag is attached to the left edge of the lid.
