Lot 437: A Victorian Cast Iron and Brass Fireplace Fender
A fireplace curb fender of Victorian design constructed from cast iron and brass. The heavy cast iron base features relief-moulded decorative elements including scrolling foliage, shell motifs, and acanthus patterns. Positioned above the base is a tubular brass rail supported by three vertical brass uprights, each topped with a spherical ball finial. The base is of a rectangular form with returns at each end. No manufacturer marks or stamps are visible on the external surfaces. There is a small orange adhesive label marked 437 on the brass rail and a small white paper label on the cast iron base.
Condition report:
The item is in as-found condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. The brass rail and supports show significant tarnish and surface oxidation. The cast iron base exhibits surface pitting and light oxidation throughout.
