A late Victorian pine washstand featuring a high splashback topped with a decoratively carved shaped cresting rail. The back is inset with two vertical panels of ceramic tiles, each panel containing five tiles with a blue and white transfer-printed floral and foliate pattern. The main body consists of a rectangular surface flanked by shaped side supports with scrolled tops. The piece is raised on turned front legs which are joined by a low, shaped front stretcher. The construction is of solid pine, typical of late 19th-century British furniture. Two inventory stickers are present on the backrest: a white sticker marked 3 3 and an orange sticker marked L. 450.
Condition report:
The washstand displays signs of age and use consistent with its period. There is significant wear to the pine surfaces, including scratches, staining, and abrasions, particularly on the top surface and side supports. The marble top typically found on this model is missing, with a wooden board in its place. The ceramic tiles appear to be in good overall condition without major chips, although fine crazing may be present. The structural integrity appears sound.
