Lot 420: A 1950s Prestige Painted Kitchen Larder Cabinet by J. Chandley and Co. Ltd
A mid-20th century British Utility style kitchen larder cabinet manufactured by J. Chandley and Co. Ltd under the Prestige brand. The unit is constructed from painted timber and plywood, featuring a characteristic two-tone colour scheme consisting of a pale cream carcass with mid-green door and drawer fronts. The upper configuration comprises two outer doors with sandblasted or etched glazing depicting stylised scroll and geometric motifs, flanking a central cupboard and a pair of small drawers. The lower section contains two larger cupboard doors, with one interior revealing an original blue and white floral patterned paper lining. The cabinet retains its original cream-painted metal pull handles and external hinges. A small rectangular metal manufacturer’s plaque is affixed to the left-hand side, bearing the inscription PRESTIGE J. CHANDLEY PRODUCT.
Condition report:
The cabinet exhibits signs of age and utilitarian wear. There is significant paint loss and chipping to the finish, most notably along the edges of the doors, drawers, and on the metal handles. The cream carcass shows surface marks, light distressing, and some staining consistent with domestic use. The interior paper lining shows signs of wear and age-related discolouration.
