Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A Dutch marquetry style two-piece display cabinet, featuring elaborate all-over floral and foliate inlays. The unit is of two-part construction, comprising a glazed upper section resting on a slightly deeper lower cupboard base. The upper section is topped with a shaped, arched pediment decorated with a central marquetry floral motif. It features twin glazed doors, each with six individual glass panes secured by wooden astragal bars. The lower section consists of a double-door cupboard, with the doors featuring solid panels decorated with intricate, high-contrast marquetry depicting floral urns and foliate scrolls. The side panels of the cabinet are also adorned with large, vertical marquetry floral designs. The piece is constructed from a dark-stained hardwood, possibly walnut or mahogany veneer, with inlays in various lighter fruitwoods. It is fitted with metal keyhole escutcheons and simple internal latches. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible. Several small adhesive labels and a yellow auction tag are present on the exterior.

Condition report:

The cabinet appears to be in generally good condition with surface wear, minor scratches, and scuffs consistent with age and storage. There are some small areas of loss or lifting to the veneer and marquetry consistent with use. The lower doors are currently open; any internal shelving for the upper section is not visible in the photograph. Some dust and dirt are present on the surfaces.
