Lot 37: Two Smiths and Smiths Enfield Wooden Mantel Clocks
This lot comprises two mid-20th-century wooden mantel clocks manufactured in England. The first clock features an arched oak-effect case with a stepped base. The circular silvered dial is marked Smiths Enfield and displays black Arabic numerals with a rail-track minute ring. It includes a chrome-plated bezel and two winding holes for a striking mechanical movement. A silver-toned presentation plaque is mounted to the right of the dial, inscribed: PRESENTED TO MR G.H. JOHNSTON / BY HIS WORKMATES ON THE OCCASION / OF HIS RETIREMENT AFTER SERVING / OVER 40 YEARS IN THE ELECTRICAL DEPT. / VICKERS – ARMSTRONGS LTD. OCT. 27TH 1959. The second clock is housed in a dark-stained arched wooden case. The dial features a two-tone design with a central dark wood-effect panel and a light-coloured chapter ring with Arabic numerals. It is marked Smiths and Made in England. The dial is set behind a chrome-plated bezel and features pierced metal hands, with two winding holes indicating a striking movement.
Condition report:
Both cases exhibit signs of age and use, including surface scratches, minor scuffs, and wear to the wooden finishes. The chrome-plated bezels show light tarnishing and pitting. The dials display minor discolouration and spotting. Both movements are untested for functionality. Keys and pendulums are not visible in the illustration.
