Lot 351: An Antique Singer Hand-Cranked Sewing Machine with Coffin-Style Wooden Case
An antique hand-cranked sewing machine manufactured by The Singer Manufacturing Company. The machine features a black-enameled cast-iron body decorated with gold-toned floral and scroll decals throughout. The arm is prominently marked with the name SINGER in large script, positioned above the text The Singer Manufacturing Co. The machine is mounted upon a wooden base and is accompanied by its original domed wooden carrying case, traditionally referred to as a coffin-style lid. This case features a turned wooden handle secured by metal brackets at one end. The mechanical assembly includes a handwheel with a folding crank handle, a tension mechanism, and a spool pin currently holding a wooden spool of thread.
Condition report:
The sewing machine is in fair condition with visible signs of age and use. There is notable wear and thinning to the gold decals, particularly on the base plate. Metal components show surface dust and minor oxidation consistent with age. The wooden base and carrying case exhibit significant wear, including finish loss, scuffing, and deep scratches. The exterior of the case also bears several modern adhesive labels, including a green paper tape strip and an orange numbered sticker.
