Lot 307: A Late 19th or Early 20th Century Carved Hardwood Wall Pocket
A hand-carved wooden wall pocket or letter holder, likely of Continental origin and executed in the Black Forest style. The piece is constructed from a dark-stained or ebonised hardwood and features deep relief carving throughout. The shaped backplate is decorated with a bird perched among berry-laden branches, while the angled side panels depict floral and foliate motifs. The structure forms a wedge-shaped receptacle intended for holding correspondence or small papers. A small white rectangular inventory sticker bearing the printed numbers 23 23 is affixed to the upper left section of the backplate.
Condition report:
The item shows age-related wear consistent with its period of manufacture. There are minor scuffs and surface abrasions to the raised edges and high points of the carving. Dust accumulation is present within the deeper recesses of the woodwork. The structure appears sound with no visible signs of significant damage or prior restoration.
