Lot 195: An Antique Jones Serpentine Fiddle-Base Hand-Crank Sewing Machine
An antique Jones hand-crank sewing machine featuring a cast-iron body with a distinctive serpentine or fiddle-base shape. The machine is finished in black enamel and decorated with ornate gilt transfer foliate and scrollwork motifs. A circular brass manufacturer’s badge is affixed to the main frame, marked JONES’ SEWING MACHINE HAND around a central armorial crest. The circular needle plate is also marked with manufacturer’s details including JONES COMPANY, although these are partially worn. The machine is mounted upon its original wooden plinth and is accompanied by a matching bentwood dome-top carrying case featuring a turned wooden handle. This model is variously known among collectors as a swan neck or cat back machine due to its unique profile.
Condition report:
The sewing machine is in original, unrestored condition. There is notable wear and loss to the gilt transfer decoration throughout the body. The metal components, including the needle plate, show surface oxidation and pitting consistent with age. The wooden plinth and carrying case exhibit scuffs, scratches, and minor surface losses. A red felt washer remains on the spool pin. The item shows a general accumulation of dust and surface grime.
