Lot 753: Late 19th or Early 20th Century Painted Pine Blanket Chest
A provincial storage or blanket chest dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The chest is constructed from pine or a similar soft wood and consists of a rectangular box with a hinged top lid. It is raised on four short cabriole-style legs with pad feet, reflecting a simplified Queen Anne influence. A single keyhole is located on the front face, although the original escutcheon is missing. The chest features a heavily distressed multi-layered painted finish, with a cream or buff upper layer flaking away to reveal historical layers of pale green and dark underpaint.
Condition report:
The chest is in a significantly worn and distressed condition. There is extensive flaking, chipping, and loss to the paintwork across all surfaces. The timber on the lid shows several prominent longitudinal shrinkage splits and cracks. There is general surface wear, scuffing, and minor losses to the wood consistent with age and long-term use. The lock escutcheon is absent.
