Lot 489: Victorian Berlin Woolwork Floral Wreath Needlepoint in a Burr Wood Frame
A framed needlepoint panel, hand-worked in the style of Berlin woolwork using wool threads on a canvas ground. The composition features a central floral wreath consisting of white and cream blossoms with grey and yellow shading, interspersed with green and blue foliage. The embroidery is set against a solid deep crimson background. The piece is housed in a wide burr wood frame, likely burr walnut, featuring a gilded inner slip and set behind glass. There is an orange rectangular sticker with the handwritten number 489 on the top left of the frame and a small white circular sticker with the number 2 on the top right of the glass. No maker’s signatures or dates are visible.
Condition report:
The needlework appears to be in good overall condition with some expected minor colour fading and age-related toning. The frame shows visible surface wear, including scuffs and small losses to the finish at the corners and edges.
