Lot 464: Arts and Crafts Copper and Wrought Iron Fire Screen
An Arts and Crafts fire screen featuring a rectangular copper panel set within a hand-forged wrought-iron frame. The copper panel is decorated with repoussé motifs, including two stylized ears of corn and a larger abstract foliate design, all set against a hammered martelé textured background. The panel is secured to the frame with large, prominent rivets. The iron frame is designed with decorative scrollwork finials at the top and splayed, arched feet for stability. This piece reflects the aesthetic of the late Victorian or early Edwardian Arts and Crafts movement, similar in style to the output of the Birmingham or Keswick schools of industrial art. No maker marks or signatures are visible on the front of the item.
Condition report:
The item shows signs of significant age and use. The copper panel has a darkened aged patina with visible areas of green verdigris oxidation. The wrought-iron frame exhibits extensive surface rust and pitting across all surfaces. A length of modern rope is currently tied around the screen, which is not an original feature of the piece.
