Lot 279: John Nicholson, Lakeland Farm, Watercolour and Ink
This landscape work by John Nicholson depicts a winter scene in the English Lake District. The composition features a traditional stone-built farmstead with outbuildings and dry stone walls. Several sheep are depicted within the snowy landscape, and a prominent bare-branched tree stands in the foreground against a mountainous fell backdrop. The work is executed in watercolour washes with fine ink detailing. It is titled Lakeland Farm in pencil to the lower right corner. The piece bears the pencil signature John Nicholson in the lower right, with a second similar signature visible immediately above it. The artwork is housed behind glass in a brown card mount and a simple dark-stained wood frame.
Condition report:
The paper exhibits significant widespread foxing and general toning across the entire surface. The brown card mount shows similar foxing and discolouration. The wooden frame has minor surface wear and small scuffs. There is an auction lot sticker on the glazing in the upper right corner.
