Lot 254: A Japanese Meiji Period Porcelain Plate Decorated with a Courtly Figure and Gilded Gadrooned Border

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A Japanese porcelain decorative plate dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912). The centre is hand-painted in polychrome overglaze enamels with gold accents, depicting a figure in traditional courtly attire, including a black eboshi hat and patterned robes. The figure is positioned among flowering shrubs and foliage against a landscape backdrop. The plate features a wide, moulded rim with a heavily gilded rope-twist or gadrooned design. The style is characteristic of Japanese export porcelain produced during the late 19th or early 20th century. The reverse is not visible, and no maker marks are present on the front. Two auction stickers are affixed to the front surface: an orange sticker numbered 254 and a white sticker numbered 15. The plate is currently secured with a metal wire hanger.

Condition report:

The plate is in good overall condition. There is evidence of minor surface wear and some rubbing to the gilding on the raised edges of the moulded rim, which is commensurate with its age.
