Lot 216: A Mid-20th Century Chinese Carved Wood Coffee Table with Glass Top

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A rectangular coffee table of Chinese design, constructed from a light-to-medium honey-coloured wood, likely camphor or elm. The top features a large, deeply carved relief panel set beneath an inset glass surface. The intricate scene depicts a traditional narrative featuring multiple figures in various poses, some seated at a table and others standing, set against a background of pavilions, a bridge, and stylised trees. Below the top is a single long drawer accented with two circular recessed finger pulls. The table is supported by four cabriole legs, each featuring carved scrolling motifs at the knees and terminating in stepped, block-like feet. This style of furniture was produced in the mid-to-late 20th century, typically in Hong Kong or mainland China for the export market. No maker’s marks, brand names, or signatures are visible. A small modern inventory label is present on the top-left corner of the glass.

Condition report:

The table is in good overall condition with minor surface wear and light scratches consistent with age and use. The glass top is intact. The relief carving shows good detail without any significant chips or losses visible. Some dust and residue are present within the deeper recessed areas of the carving.
