A collection of Victorian carte de visite (CdV) photographs dating from the late 19th century. The assembly includes studio portraits from several identified photographers of the period. Notable items within the collection include a portrait of a cricketer in full batting attire, including pads and bat, positioned before wickets; this card bears the mark of the Mayall studio (John Jabez Edwin Mayall, London and Brighton). Two cards are attributed to the Fradelle studio (Albert Eugene Fradelle, 246 Regent Street, London), one depicting a young boy in a military or cadet-style uniform standing on a pedestal, and another showing a child seated at a table with a framed miniature. Also included is a portrait of a long-haired dog by Mr. and Mrs. Payne of Aylesbury, a figure in a white habit or theatrical costume by Sulman and Co. of Holloway Road, and various other studio portraits including a study of two women in an embrace. The photographs are predominantly albumen prints mounted on standard card stock mounts of the era.
Condition report:
The collection exhibits signs of age and wear typical for late 19th-century photographic ephemera. Conditions include sepia toning, varying degrees of fading (most notable on the Fradelle child portrait), and minor foxing. The card mounts show edge wear, corner bumping, and light surface soiling in places. Several items are currently protected in plastic sleeves.
