Lot 5: A Victorian W & T Avery Ltd Cast Iron and Brass 1lb Beam Balance Scale with Weights
A vintage beam balance scale manufactured by the British firm W & T Avery Ltd. The piece is constructed with a shaped, black painted cast iron base featuring raised lettering on both sides stating W & T AVERY LTD on the upper rail and TO WEIGH 1lb on the lower rail. The assembly includes a brass beam and central indicator with two distinct brass pans: one deep-sided bowl and one shallow, flat plate. The lot is accompanied by a set of circular iron weights of graduated sizes.
Condition report:
The item displays signs of age and use. There is visible surface tarnish and oxidation present on the brass pans and beam. The cast iron base exhibits minor wear and some small chips to the black painted finish. The iron weights are currently bundled with adhesive tape which may leave a residue upon removal. The mechanical functionality and weighing accuracy have not been professionally tested.
