Lot 341: A Collection of Antique and Vintage Wooden Measuring Rules and Yardsticks

The auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

This collection consists of several straight wooden measuring instruments, including yardsticks and a gauging rod, typically employed in the drapery, tailoring, or general trade. The group features a broad boxwood yardstick, flat in profile and graduated in inches up to 35, with the final increment marked 5 YARD. This piece includes a brass protective cap at one end. A second flat rule of lighter-coloured hardwood displays dual metric and imperial scales; it is marked 95 1 METRE at one end and 5 cm YARD at the other, featuring brass tips at both ends and an integrated hanging hole. A third flat wooden yardstick is finished with a dark stain and displays large-format inch markings up to 35, terminating at a YARD mark. The collection is completed by a slender, rounded measuring rod, possibly boxwood, which is fitted with brass ferrules at the ends and bears faint numerical graduations. Small stamped verification marks are visible on the dual-scale rule near the brass fitting, though they are not fully legible.

Lengths: Approximately 91.5 cm (36 inches) and 100 cm (1 metre).

Condition report:

All items are in used vintage condition consistent with their age and functional history. Physical characteristics include surface scuffs, scratches, and general wear to the timber. There are areas of darkening and patination to the wood surfaces. The brass end caps and ferrules show signs of oxidation and tarnish. The stamped and engraved markings remain largely legible across the collection.
