A pair of traditional oil paintings on canvas by the Dutch artist Cornelis van Heest. The first composition depicts a wooded landscape featuring a figure on horseback travelling along a path toward a distant settlement under an expansive, cloudy sky. The second work is a winter canal scene in the Dutch tradition, portraying figures on the ice alongside a large yellow-walled gabled building with a windmill in the far distance. Both works are presented in matching ornate gilt-composition frames decorated with scrolled acanthus-leaf corners and shell-motif moldings. The winter landscape is signed C. v. Heest and dated 78 in the lower right corner. White auction lot labels numbered 22 and orange labels numbered 170 are present on the frame edges.
Condition report:
Both canvases show evidence of fine, stable craquelure and a light layer of surface dirt. The gilt frames exhibit typical age-related wear including minor cracking to the composition and small losses to the gilded surface.
