March timed auction
A single provincial English oak side chair in the North Country vernacular style. The high back features five graduated wavy horizontal slats set between square-section uprights. The seat is of envelope-woven rush construction. The underframe comprises turned front legs and straight rear legs, all connected by plain-turned stretchers. The chair is constructed using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The oak frame has a dark-stained finish. Two modern adhesive inventory labels are present on the back left upright, one orange label numbered 258 and one white label numbered 9 and 6. No maker’s marks or stamps are visible.
Condition report:
The chair is in fair condition. The rush seat shows significant wear with fraying and broken strands along the front rail and side edges. The oak frame is structurally sound but exhibits surface scuffs, small dings, and finish wear consistent with age and domestic use.
