March timed auction
This single side chair is designed in a late Victorian or Edwardian vernacular style, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The frame is constructed from a dark-stained hardwood, likely beech or a similar close-grained timber, featuring a high back with five vertical slats set between the uprights. The back is surmounted by a decoratively shaped and scrolled top rail. The chair is supported by turned front legs and square-section rear legs, which are joined by an H-pattern arrangement of turned stretchers. The seat is currently finished with a square of hessian fabric secured with upholstery tacks. Standard mortise and tenon joinery is used for the back slats and rails. A small white rectangular adhesive tag with the character 1 is present on the left upright of the chair back. No other signatures, factory stamps, or maker’s marks are visible on the frame.
Condition report:
The chair is in worn, as-found condition. There is significant loss of the dark-stained finish, particularly on the front legs and stretchers, revealing the lighter wood beneath. The frame shows various scuffs, scratches, and marks consistent with age and use. The hessian seat covering is rudimentary and incomplete, suggesting it is a base layer or a temporary repair.
