A collection of approximately ten items of British ephemera dating from the early 20th century, circa 1900 to 1920. The lot includes a series of printed First World War sentimental postcards. These cards depict a British soldier in uniform at a field desk, accompanied by a ghost-like vignette of a female figure. The cards are marked DOWNES, W. COPYRIGHT and include printed verses such as for my darling / Memories fond arise today / Tenderer far than words can say / In my heart alone you dwell / With a love too deep to tell and To the one I love. / Though far apart today we are, / I send my love so true, / And though I cannot see your face, / I’m thinking dear of you. One card is numbered 7614. The collection further comprises several photographic portraits. These include a studio portrait of a young woman with long hair leaning on a rustic chair, a portrait of an elderly woman and a young girl, and a horizontal group photograph of approximately sixteen women in three rows, likely representing a social or work-related group. A single outdoor snapshot of a woman in a patterned dress is also included.
