Lot 340: A Pair of Maritime Oil Paintings on Board
This lot comprises a pair of maritime oil paintings executed on board, each depicting a sailing vessel at sea. The first work depicts a multi-masted ship navigating a stormy sea under a dark sky. The piece is characterised by vigorous brushwork and impasto highlights on the crests of the waves. It is housed in a dark wood frame featuring a wide linen slip and a gilded fillet. Faint, illegible blue characters are present in the lower right corner, possibly beginning with the letter G or S. The second work is a ship portrait of a three-masted vessel with sails unfurled in calm blue waters. The ship flies several flags, including a United States ensign. This painting is presented in a heavy, dark-stained oak frame with carved pyramidal corner bosses and a gold-toned mount. Both works are protected under glass.
Condition report:
Both paintings appear to be in good overall condition. There is some visible surface dirt to the glass and frames. No significant craquelure, paint loss, or previous repairs are evident from visual inspection.
