A collection of Torquay motto ware earthenware, in the style of the South Devon potteries. The items are manufactured from a terracotta clay body with a cream-coloured slip and lead glaze. The group includes a variety of domestic forms such as a teapot, a lidded canister, a large shallow bowl, multiple jugs and pitchers of graduating sizes, mugs, and small bowls. Decoration consists of hand-painted coloured slips and sgraffito or slip-painted inscriptions. Decorative motifs include rustic cottage scenes, windmills, floral designs, and blue dotted borders. Legible inscriptions on the pieces include Many hands make light work, Masters two will never do / take yer wull of it, Be the day weary or be the day long, Tea, Gud morn, and cream.
Condition report:
The items generally appear in good vintage condition. A visible hairline crack is present on the rim of the large shallow bowl. The collection shows signs of minor surface wear, light crazing to the glaze, and small firing imperfections consistent with age and use. Most items have orange adhesive auction lot stickers.
