Lot 230: John Pine, Hand-Coloured Engraved Map of the British Isles and the Spanish Armada, 1739
A hand-coloured engraved map of the British Isles, titled A CHART shewing the several Places of Action between the ENGLISH and SPANISH Fleets with the Places where several of the SPANISH Ships were destroy-ed in their return to SPAIN North about the BRITISH ISLANDS. This print was published by John Pine on 24 June 1739, as part of the series The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords. The central map illustrates the tactical movements and retreat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The map is enclosed within an elaborate allegorical border featuring figures representing Divine Providence, maritime motifs, and lightning bolts. Two decorative medallions with Latin inscriptions are located in the lower corners. The work is signed H. Gravelot delin. at the bottom left and J. Pine Sculp. at the bottom right. The bottom centre bears the publication line: Published by John Pine June 24th 1739 according to Act of Parliament. The print is presented in a modern gilt-finish wooden frame with a cream mount and glazing.
Condition report:
The paper displays even toning consistent with age. Minor surface dirt and light foxing are visible within the margins. The item has not been examined out of the frame.
