Lot 224: Aramis (20th Century), Mediterranean Harbour Scene, Oil on Canvas, 1972
This mid-20th-century oil on canvas depicts a Mediterranean harbour scene, featuring a densely clustered town of white-walled buildings with terracotta roofs rising toward a central church or cathedral. The composition overlooks a port with several masted vessels at anchor. The work is executed in an impressionistic style characterised by loose, confident brushwork and a muted, atmospheric palette of ochres, greens, and greys. The painting is signed and dated Aramis 10/72 in the lower left corner. The work is presented in a large, ornate gilded swept frame featuring scrolling acanthus and shell-moulded motifs at the corners and centres. The canvas is stretched and no verso labels are visible from the front.
