A pair of decorative boxes. The first is a rectangular black lacquer or papier-mâché casket in the Japanese style, featuring three inset fan and medallion-shaped panels. These panels are decorated with floral motifs in red and ochre tones, reminiscent of Meiji period maki-e lacquerware. The second item is an ornate gilt-metal jewellery box, likely constructed from embossed brass. The lid features a cream-coloured inset with a radiating sunburst pattern and a central oval miniature portrait depicting a lady in 18th-century style dress. Both items bear auction lot stickers numbered 102 18. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the exterior surfaces of either piece.
Condition report:
The black lacquer box shows visible signs of age and use, including chipping to the lacquer along the edges and corners, and general surface wear. The gilt-metal box exhibits wear to the gilded finish and minor tarnishing consistent with age.
