JUNE AUCTION

Lot 121: A Collection of Staffordshire Character and Toby Jugs, Attributed to Royal Doulton

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

An assortment of glazed earthenware character and Toby jugs, likely produced in the Staffordshire potteries. The collection includes a central full-bodied Toby jug depicting a seated gentleman in a red coat and tricorn hat, holding a foaming pitcher of ale. Surrounding this are several character jugs of various sizes representing a range of historical and maritime figures. Notable designs include a pirate with a skull and crossbones emblem on his hat, a figure in a black Puritan-style hat with a buckle, and various characters in naval and period attire. Each piece features polychrome hand-painted decoration under a clear lead glaze. While no makers marks are visible in the provided image, the forms and execution are highly consistent with mid-twentieth-century productions by manufacturers such as Royal Doulton, Beswick, and Shorter and Son.

Condition report:

The items generally appear to be in good condition. Several pieces show evidence of fine glaze crazing and minor shelf wear to the bases. Close inspection may reveal small chips or nibbles to the rims or protruding features of the hats, which are common for ceramics of this age and type. No significant cracks or professional restorations are immediately apparent from the visual overview.
