Lot 252: A Japanese Kutani Style Porcelain Plate with Figurative Panels and Metal Rivet Repairs
A Japanese porcelain plate decorated in the Kutani style, featuring a palette of iron-red, cobalt blue, and extensive gilding. The asymmetrical composition includes a rectangular panel depicting figures in a traditional interior setting and a quatrefoil panel showing a figure in a landscape with architectural and botanical elements. The surrounding ground is decorated with scattered circular mon motifs, butterflies, and a floral spray. The rim is finished with a wide brocade-style border incorporating geometric patterns and floral scrolls. The front of the plate bears an orange auction label numbered 252 and a white label numbered 15. The reverse side is not visible.
Condition report:
The plate shows significant historical structural repairs, with at least four visible sets of metal staples or rivets securing cracks extending from the rim into the body. There is noticeable rubbing and wear to the gilt and enamel decoration throughout, particularly on the raised edges and within the central panels, consistent with age and use. Surface grime and minor enamel losses are present.
