A Victorian helmet-shaped coal scuttle of riveted sheet brass construction. The body features a blackened exterior finish, with the underlying yellow metal visible at points of wear. It is fitted with a heavy-gauge wrought iron swing handle, secured to the sides by decorative trefoil-shaped escutcheon plates and heavy rivets. The interior shows evidence of use as a fuel container. This style of hearth furniture was common in British households during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. No maker marks or stamps are visible on the object.
Condition report:
The scuttle shows signs of extensive domestic use. The exterior blackened finish is worn and flaking, particularly at the leading edge and base, revealing the brass beneath. There are minor dents and surface abrasions throughout, commensurate with age and utility. The interior is heavily soiled with residue consistent with its original function as a coal container.
