Lot 280: A 20th Century Indian Tulwar with Velvet Sheathed Scabbard

The auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

An Indian tulwar featuring a curved, single-edged steel blade. The blade is decorated with etched foliate and scrollwork patterns along the upper section. Near the hilt, the blade is marked with the etched text MADE IN INDIA and a partially legible cursive inscription beginning with the word By. The hilt is constructed from a cast dark-toned metal alloy, featuring a traditional disk-shaped pommel with a central spike, a contoured grip, and a knuckle guard. The accompanying scabbard consists of a wooden core covered in orange-red velvet with a central gold-toned braided trim. The scabbard is fitted with a brass-coloured metal throat, a mid-band with a suspension loop, and a long chape. This item is likely a 20th-century decorative or souvenir piece.
Blade length: Not recorded.

Condition report:

The sword is in fair condition. The blade exhibits visible surface oxidation, rust spots, and pitting. The hilt shows a darkened patina consistent with age. The velvet covering of the scabbard displays signs of wear and thinning. The metal scabbard fittings show minor denting, tarnish, and surface wear. Auction house stickers are present on the hilt and scabbard throat.
