Lot 276: A Japanese hand-painted paper and bamboo wagasa parasol, mid-20th century
A Japanese wagasa parasol featuring a bamboo shaft and numerous dark-stained bamboo ribs supporting a paper canopy. The canopy is decorated with hand-painted blue floral motifs, possibly irises, set against a graduated pink-to-yellow wash background. The interior hub is finished with traditional multi-coloured protective stringing in orange and teal. The parasol is topped with a turned black wooden finial. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the body, hub, or ribs. An orange adhesive sticker with handwritten numbers 2, 7, and 6 is present on the top wooden finial.
Condition report:
The parasol is in fair to good condition, consistent with age. There is general age-related discolouration, yellowing, and foxing across the paper canopy. A small translucent adhesive tape repair is visible on the exterior near the top. The scalloped edges of the paper show minor wear and small nicks. The bamboo structure and decorative stringing appear sound and intact.
