This commemorative display features a central silk memorial ribbon dedicated to Private Joseph Sutcliffe of the 1/6th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Own) Territorials. The ribbon is printed with two crossed Union Jack flags and a poem, followed by the text: In Loving Memory of PRIVATE JOSEPH SUTCLIFFE (1/6th West Yorks. Regiment Territorials) Who was Killed in Action Near Ypres, December 19, 1915, Aged 23 years. 958, Manchester Road, Bradford. With the family’s kind regards. The ribbon is surrounded by a collection of woven silk cigarette cards of the type issued by tobacco companies such as B.D.V. and J. Wix and Sons. The silks include regimental badges for the West Yorkshire Regiment, South Wales Borderers, Essex Regiment, York and Lancaster Regiment, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, Somerset Light Infantry, Coldstream Guards, Royal Scots Greys, 3rd Hussars, and the Royal Army Medical Corps. Naval interest is represented by silks for HMS Triumph, HMS Glasgow, and HMS Vanguard. The collection also features international orders and medals including the Medaille Militaire, the Peninsular War Gold Cross, the Pour le Merite, the Order of St. Gregory the Great, the Order of St. Patrick, the Legion of Honour, and the Order of St. Olaf. Various national and maritime flags are also present, including those of Japan, Belgium, Portugal, Greece, and Denmark. Each silk is bordered with a purple braided cord and the entire group is mounted on a black velvet-covered backing.
Condition report:
The central memorial ribbon shows minor fraying at the upper and lower edges. The surrounding woven silks remain in good condition with vibrant colours and light age-related toning. All components are securely attached to the fabric backing.
