Lot 256: A Carved and Painted Wooden Figurine of a Whirling Dervish
A carved wooden figurine depicting a Sufi Whirling Dervish in a traditional Sema dance pose. The figure is shown with arms outstretched, wearing a tall cylindrical black hat known as a sikke, a short jacket, and a long, pleated, cream-coloured skirt. The facial features and facial hair are hand-painted. The construction consists of multiple wooden components, with the wood grain visible through the finish on the skirt. No maker’s marks or signatures are present. An orange adhesive tag with the handwritten number 256 is attached to the skirt.
Condition report:
The figurine exhibits visible horizontal seams and hairline cracks where the wooden components are joined, specifically at the waist and the right shoulder joint. There is minor surface wear and light abrasions consistent with age and handling.
