Lot 171: A late 19th or early 20th-century set of brass and steel mathematical drawing instruments in a fitted wooden case

The auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A set of mathematical and drafting drawing instruments dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The collection is primarily constructed from brass with steel tips and adjustment screws. The set includes various dividers, compasses with interchangeable points, extension bars, and ruling pens. One ruling pen features a white bone or composite handle. The instruments are housed in a rectangular mahogany-toned hardwood case with brass hinges. The interior of the case and the lid are lined with fitted blue velvet. No maker marks, engraved scales, or inscriptions are visible on the instruments or the case.

Condition report:

The set is incomplete, with several empty compartments in the fitted tray indicating missing components. The brass elements show a darkened patina and surface tarnish, while the steel components exhibit spots of oxidation and light pitting. The white handle of the ruling pen shows discolouration. The wooden case has surface scuffs, scratches, and wear to the finish, particularly at the corners. The blue velvet lining is faded, worn, and contains accumulated dust. The exterior of the case is missing its lock plate or escutcheon. Mechanical function of the joints and screws has not been tested, though they appear structurally sound with age-related stiffness.
