TIMED SALE TO END FRIDAY LAST CHANCE
This lot comprises two framed works on paper depicting historic British architecture. The first is a watercolor on paper showing a large Gothic church, possibly a ruin such as Bolton Abbey, rendered in a simplified illustrative style with blue, grey, and green washes. The work is signed lower right in black ink G. RIPLEY followed by the date 1972. The watercolor is housed in a white wooden frame with a gold-tone inner edge and a fabric-textured inner border. The second work is a monochromatic pencil drawing on wove paper depicting a two-storey stone building featuring a prominent pointed arched gateway and multiple mullioned windows. The drawing is executed with fine linear hatching and cross-hatching to define textures and shadows. It is presented in a dark-stained wooden frame with a gold-tone fillet and a dark green mat. The drawing is unsigned. Both frames are equipped with glass and hanging wires to the reverse.
Condition report:
Both works show signs of age and display issues related to storage. The pencil drawing exhibits significant and widespread foxing, appearing as brown spots, particularly concentrated across the left half of the paper (photo 1). The watercolor shows light toning to the paper and some minor fading to the pigments. The white frame of the watercolor has some small scuffs and surface dirt to the corners (photo 2). The green mat of the drawing appears slightly faded. Both frames show minor wear and small nicks consistent with handling.
