Lot 161: Impressionist Style Landscape Oil Painting in Gilt Wood Frame
A landscape orientation oil painting on canvas depicting a rural scene. The composition features two dark, gabled structures, likely cottages or barns, set against a dense background of trees and foliage. The work is executed in an impressionistic style with loose, textured brushwork. The palette is dominated by cool blues and greens in the foreground and vegetation, which contrasts with a pale, atmospheric sky containing horizontal streaks of pink and orange light, suggesting dawn or dusk. The canvas is housed in a substantial, stepped gilt-wood frame with a beaded inner border. Condition report:
The paint surface exhibits significant and widespread craquelure, with both horizontal and vertical cracking visible across the entire composition, most noticeably in the lighter areas of the sky (photo 1). There is evidence of surface dirt and possible light foxing throughout the canvas. The gilt-wood frame shows minor wear and small separations at the mitered corners (photo 1).
