A pair of large earthenware garden planters featuring contrasting decorative styles. The first planter is of a low, wide-bellied form, with a deep oxblood red glazed rim displaying a natural crackle effect. The body is encased in a tightly woven natural wicker or rattan basketry. The interior is finished in a pale cream glaze, which features a handwritten price mark reading £10 in black ink. The second planter is of a tapered ovoid form with a thick, rounded reddish-brown rim and interior. The exterior body is decorated with a wide ochre-toned relief band depicting a repeating pattern of stylised leaves. Below this band, the lower body is finished in a mottled green and brown drip glaze. No maker marks are present on either piece.
Condition report:
The red-rimmed planter exhibits extensive surface crazing to the glazed rim and visible soil residue to the interior (photo 1). The wicker casing appears intact with typical minor fraying consistent with outdoor use. The second planter shows significant dried soil and root residue across the interior and rim (photo 1). The exterior glaze and relief decoration appear in good order with only minor surface abrasions and superficial marks from handling.
