A horizontal landscape watercolor on paper executed in a tonalist style. The composition depicts a wide, misty vista across a body of water toward a large, hazy mountain range. The foreground features a wooded shoreline to the right with two small figures rendered in red and dark tones standing at the water’s edge. The artist has used translucent washes of blue, grey, and earthy tones to create an atmospheric perspective. The work is presented in a multi-layered wash-lined mount with gilt and blue-grey accents. It is housed in a decorative wooden frame with a silvered and gilt finish under glass. No signature or inscription is visible on the front of the work. An orange adhesive label reading 190 is present on the mount in the upper left corner.
Condition report:
The watercolor shows visible mat burn and darkening around the perimeter where the paper meets the mount (photo 1). The paper displays general toning and yellowing consistent with age. There is evidence of light-fading, particularly in the sky and distant mountain areas. Small specks of dust and minor debris are trapped behind the glass. The frame has light surface wear and minor chips to the gilt finish along the edges and corners.
