A collection of nested brass cookware comprising two distinct sets, featuring four deep basins and three pans. The vessels are constructed from spun or hammered brass with rolled rims. One set consists of four nested round-bottomed basins or jam pots, each fitted with a heavy wrought iron swing handle attached by large rivets. Housed within the smallest basin is a brass kettle of traditional form, featuring a fixed overhead iron handle, a simple spout, and a fitted lid with a central knob. The second set contains three nested brass pans, each designed with a flat, elongated iron handle secured to the body with rivets. The metalwork exhibits a dark, aged patina on the exterior surfaces and shows evidence of traditional manufacturing techniques. An orange and white adhesive label with the printed number 124 is visible on the swing handle of the largest basin, and a smaller white adhesive label printed with 25 25 is present on the same handle.
Condition report:
The collection is in a used, antique condition. The brass exteriors show significant oxidation, surface scratching, and a dark patina throughout (photo 1). The interiors of the basins and pans exhibit heavy spotting, verdigris, and residue from historical use (photo 1). The wrought iron handles show extensive surface rust and pitting, particularly on the swing handles of the nested basins (photo 1). Minor dents are visible on the bodies and rims of the larger vessels, consistent with heavy domestic utility. The kettle shows surface wear and oxidation but retains its original lid and handle.
