Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A George III period longcase clock, also known as a grandfather clock, housed in a pine case. The case features a swan-neck pediment with a central pierced fretwork panel and two brass finial mounts. The hood is supported by turned pillars flanking a glazed door. The trunk contains a long rectangular door with a shaped top edge and a brass pull knob, terminating in a plain box base. The 12-inch brass dial is signed in an engraved cursive script Joshua Alloway Taunton across the lower section of the chapter ring. The dial features cast brass spandrels at the corners depicting cherubic figures. The chapter ring is marked with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals at five-minute intervals. The matted centre includes a subsidiary seconds dial and a square date aperture. The movement is a mechanical, weight-driven eight-day type, indicated by two winding holes to the dial face. A white adhesive label with the characters 21 21 is present on the upper right of the dial glass (photo 2).

Condition report:

The pine case exhibits surface wear throughout, including scratches, indentations, and staining consistent with age (photo 1). The two brass finials are missing from the mounts on the pediment (photo 2). The timber shows a dry appearance and appears to have been stripped of a previous finish. The brass dial displays natural oxidation and surface patina. The wooden knob on the hood door is a later replacement. The weights and pendulum are not present in the photographs; the mechanical working order is unknown.
