A mid-20th-century decorative magazine rack constructed with a wooden core and clad in embossed brass sheeting. The front panel features a high-relief tavern scene in the 17th-century Dutch style, depicting figures seated around a circular table outside a brick building with a large barrel to the left. The sides are similarly clad in brass with embossed foliate and scrollwork patterns. The top is fitted with a central cast metal carry handle featuring an ornate pierced design. The interior is divided into two sections by a central wooden partition. The base and interior show natural wood surfaces. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the exterior or interior surfaces. A white rectangular adhesive label is present on the right-hand side of the front panel featuring the hand-written number 55. A small orange rectangular label is present on the top front edge with a hand-written number 62.
Condition report:
The brass cladding shows significant oxidation and tarnishing throughout, particularly concentrated in the recessed areas of the embossed scene and along the base (photo 1). There is visible wear to the brass finish on the top edges and corners, revealing the darker base material beneath. The metal handle exhibits surface pitting and age-related discolouration. Several small dents and surface scratches are present across the metal panels, consistent with domestic use. The wooden interior and base appear structurally sound but exhibit dry surface wear and light scuffing.
