Lot 254: A Pair of Framed Watercolours by D. G. Harding
A pair of English topographical watercolours on paper by the artist D. G. Harding. The first work depicts a street scene looking towards a cathedral, featuring traditional houses, two figures, and a parked motor car. This piece is signed and dated in ink at the lower right corner D G HARDING ’92. The second work, executed in the same hand, illustrates a multi-arched stone bridge spanning a river with a church tower visible in the middle distance. Both works are rendered in an illustrative style using light watercolour washes over pencil outlines. Each piece is presented in a card mount within a glazed wooden frame. White adhesive tags with the number 15 are attached to the front of each frame, and an orange adhesive tag reading 254 is fixed to the mount of the bridge scene (image 1).
Condition report:
Both card mounts exhibit significant and heavy foxing with widespread brown spotting across their surfaces (image 1). The watercolour depicting the bridge shows visible foxing spots within the image area, most notably in the sky and water (image 3). Both artworks show light overall toning to the paper. The wooden frames show minor scuffs and surface wear consistent with age (image 1).
