A South American yerba mate cup, or mate, comprising a hollowed, dried gourd body with a decorative silver-toned metal mount. The mount, which encircles the upper portion of the vessel, features embossed repoussé decoration of stylized foliate scrolls and floral motifs. The gourd body has a dark, polished, and naturally mottled finish. A white rectangular adhesive paper label is attached to the side of the gourd body, printed with the number 19 appearing twice in black. No maker marks, hallmarks, or signatures are visible on the metalwork or the base of the gourd. The interior of the gourd shows dark staining and residue consistent with the traditional brewing and consumption of yerba mate tea.
Condition report:
The item is in good vintage condition. The gourd body exhibits minor surface scratches and natural mottling (photo 1 and 2). The metal mount shows light tarnishing and wear consistent with age (photo 1 and 3). The interior is stained with organic residue typical of a used tea vessel (photo 3). No cracks or structural damage are visible in the gourd or the metalwork.
