Lot 524: A Weathered Cast Stone Garden Statue of a Reclining Cherub
A cast stone garden statue depicting a reclining cherub or putto. The figure is modelled with curly hair and is shown holding a large, rounded object across its lap, which appears to be a fish or a cornucopia. The statue is set upon an integral, irregular naturalistic base. The piece is constructed from cast stone with a visible coarse aggregate texture. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are discernible on the visible surfaces of the statue or its base. A small, unidentified white fragment is present on the base near the feet of the figure.
Condition report:
The statue is in a heavily weathered condition consistent with long-term outdoor placement (photo 1). There is extensive surface pitting and a well-developed natural patina consisting of grey and green lichen and moss growth across the entirety of the piece (photo 1). No major structural cracks, significant losses, or past repairs are visible from the single provided angle.
