Lot 397: Large Hand-Knotted Wool Oushak Style Carpet
A large hand-knotted wool carpet featuring a decorative Oushak style design. The rectangular field is rendered in a warm terracotta colour, showcasing an all-over pattern of large-scale palmettes and stylised floral rosettes in shades of slate blue, ivory, and taupe. The field exhibits natural horizontal colour variations known as abrash, characteristic of hand-dyed wool. The main border is set on an ivory ground with repeating floral patterns, framed by a narrow inner border with a slate blue and white geometric meander or Greek key motif. The carpet is constructed with a wool pile on a cotton foundation. A small white rectangular adhesive tag is present on the surface of the pile; any markings on this tag are not legible.
Condition report:
The carpet is partially rolled in the photograph. The visible areas of the pile are in good condition with no apparent staining, holes, or significant thinning. There is minor fraying and wear visible along the selvedge edges (photo 1).
