Lot 146: A British Vintage Hand-Painted Wooden Barber Shop Trade Sign for Norman's Hairdressing for Men by N.C. Garrett
This item is a British vintage hand-painted wooden trade sign for a gentleman’s barber shop. The sign is constructed from a long, horizontal wooden plank with a black painted ground. It features bold, hand-rendered typography in a three-dimensional block style. The primary text reads NORMAN’S in a yellow ochre colour with red and black drop shadows to create a sense of depth. Below this, in a similar but smaller font, is the service description HAIRDRESSING FOR MEN. A small white circular adhesive inventory sticker bearing the printed number 7 is present near the top centre edge. To the far right edge of the sign, a hand-painted inscription in yellow reads PROP. N.C. GARRETT.
Condition report:
The sign is in a heavily weathered and aged condition consistent with long-term exterior use. There is significant paint loss and flaking, particularly to the yellow pigment of the main lettering where the underlying wood is visible. The black background exhibits extensive craquelure and surface scuffing throughout. The wooden board shows wear to the corners and edges.
